The Homecoming
07.03.2017 - 19.03.2017

Tony-Award winning play by Nobel laureate Harold Pinter

Bravely challenging moral standards of society, starkly revealing the dark side of human instincts and desire

Hypocrisies exposed in the homecoming of life itself

After leaving home for years, philosophy professor Teddy returns with his wife Ruth. In the home town, the couple’s relationship begins to change and the distance between them grows. Teddy’s father Max later witnesses a flirtatious event between Teddy’s two younger brothers, Lenny and Joey, and Ruth. As Teddy proposes leaving with her, Max comes up with the surprising suggestion that she should stay …Which path should Ruth follow? Only she herself can decide.

British theatre giant Harold Pinter was hailed when awarded the Nobel Literature Prize  as “having changed the face of 20th century theatre”, and The Homecoming is thought by many to be among his masterpieces. Staged in London and New York, it was awarded the Tony Award for Best Play. Its 40th anniversary Broadway revival in 2008 was also nominated the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play. Employing his own distinctive style, which critics have named Pinteresque, a controversial language and depicting equally provocative scenes, The Homecoming reveals the primal abnormality and corrupted conventions of a dominant patriarchal society. Featuring a new translation by Paul Poon, the current production is directed by Ceri Sherlock, Dean of the School of Drama at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, returning after his 2013 award-winning production for the HKRep of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, taking up the challenge together with the cast of actors and actresses to interpret this masterpiece as HKRep’s season finale.
