Revival of HKRep's legendary Classic
De Ling & Empress Dowager Ci Xi is a HKRep classic, and will have its fourth revival this year, performed in Mandarin. Lisa Lu returns to the stage as the Empress Dowager with Kenneth Tsang as her secret lover, while HKRep Director Laureate Fredric Mao plays the role of Emperor Guangxu, and the Best Actress Winner Mercy Wong as De Ling. A stellar cast will assemble once again to perform in this HKRep's legendary classic.
The play was already a hit during its 1998 premiere. In 2001, the production revival also won critical praises. When the HKRep remounted this play two years ago, it provided the audience a choice of two performing versions (Cantonese and Mandarin), inviting acclaimed international film actress Lisa Lu to play the Empress Dowager, while pairing her with Kenneth Tsang as Rong Lu, in the company of HKRep's actors. This play has won numerous awards, including Hong Kong Drama Awards for Best Ensemble, Best Play, Best Director, Best Costume Design, Best Leading Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and was among the "Ten Most Popular Productions".
