Alice in Bed
   Introduction

Fantasy•Desire•Isolation•Identity
Pioneering American feminist Susan Sontag's first play

Alice in Bed is based on the 19th-century lives of the celebrated writer Henry James and his siblings. William is highly respected as a philosopher and psychologist. Alice, their young sister, is plagued with depression since she was 19 and confined to her room for most of her life. There she exercises her imagination, using a female perspective to dissect issues such as identity, social restrictions and family tyranny. Alice in Bed blends real-life and fictional events, truth and fancy, offering a rare glimpse into the private world of Alice James, a famed diarist in her own right.
