This book comprises two scripts by local playwright Matthew Cheng: Auspicious Day and Ambiguous. In the former, a bride-to-be on the eve of her wedding and her elder sister pour their hearts out with shocking family secrets. In the latter, the romantic chemistry between a middle-aged man and a housewife forces them to ponder the meaning of their respective dreary marriages.
Although the two scripts differ immensely in terms of tone—spanning love, intimacy, hatred, resentment, blood ties and a call for blood—they are surprisingly alike in making us contemplate what marriage and family entail. Published by HKRep, this collection provides the reader with a taste of Cheng’s remarkably imaginative brand of humour.
