Returning to the stage for a third run in Hong Kong

【HKRep】The Impossible Trial – a musical, the first original Cantonese musical commissioned by WestK, co-presented and co-produced with HKRep, will return this year to critical acclaim. The musical features a top-notch creative team from Hong Kong, including composer and musical director Leon Ko, lyricist Chris Shum, playwright Cheung Fei Fan, director Fong Chun Kit, staging director and choreographer Ivanhoe Lam, scenographer Wong Yat Kwan, as well as main cast members Lau Shau Ching, Leung Chung Hang, Jordan Cheng, Ronny Yuen, Tunes Ting, Sheena Chan, Clinton Zhang, Christopher Ying and more, alongside the live band performance. It will begin its Mainland China tour in June, gracing the stages in Shanghai and Beijing, with Hong Kong as its final stop. The Impossible Trial will return to the Xiqu Centre in WestK from 14th to 30th August for its third Hong Kong run, featuring a total of 20 performances. Tickets are available now on POPTICKET.

The musical tells the story of Fong Tong Geng, Guangdong’s most prominent advocate, who is known for his greed and malice. However, at the height of his career, heaven deals Fong a blow and his reputation and wealth vanish overnight. Haunted by the bitter ghost of a childhood friend, Fong fights his way back to the magistracy to right his wrongs and redeem himself as the champion of the common man.

The highly acclaimed and award-winning musical, The Impossible Trial, premiered in 2022 and enjoyed a successful rerun in 2023, staging more than 30 performances in total. The exceptional production and performances have won acclaim from local and mainland audiences as well as critics and industry professionals. The production has won 24 awards in Hong Kong and various provinces and cities in the Mainland. It won the Annual Outstanding Musical Award in the Professional Original Musicals category at the inaugural SHOWLIFE Musical Award 2023 held in February 2023 in Shanghai. It also won 10 major awards at the 31st Hong Kong Drama Awards in June 2023 including Best Production, making it the most honoured show in the awards’ history. In 2024, this musical clinched the prestigious Best Play and Best Actor awards at the inaugural Ou-yang Yuqian Drama Awards initiated by the Central Academy of Drama in October. It also won five awards, including the Special Award from the Organising Committee and Best Composer of the Year, at the Beijing Tianqiao Musical Annual Ceremony in November. In January 2025, the musical received a total of six awards at the 2024 China Musical Association Annual Gala, including the most popular original musical of the year and outstanding composer.

The Impossible Trial features intricate and poignant emotions, with a thought-provoking storyline and diverse musical styles, including Cantonese opera, nursery rhymes, waltz, classical, 1920s’ Broadway style, ballads, rock, pop folk songs and Buddhist music. The stage design integrates classical and modern aesthetics, showcasing Hong Kong’s unique artistic fusion. Since 2015, when the creative concept of the musical started to take shape, the team has taken the production through significant refinements to reach new heights for an original Cantonese musical.

In preparation for the musical’s touring in the Mainland and overseas, WestK and HKRep initiated an open casting call in April last year to recruit new cast members worldwide. A total of 19 new faces including Leung Chung Hang and Ronny Yuen, who have just been awarded respectively the Best Supporting Actor (Tragedy/ Drama) and Best Actor in a Musical at the 33rd Hong Kong Drama Awards, as well as Sheena Chan and Christopher Ying, will join the production. Members of both the new and original casts will take to the stage for this year’s performances in the Mainland and Hong Kong.

Paul Tam, Executive Director, Performing Arts, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, said, “We are thrilled that after two hugely successful production runs and more than 30 shows in Hong Kong, The Impossible Trial has gained so much momentum that it finally takes the big leap and soar off to Shanghai and Beijing before a triumphant return to Hong Kong this summer. An idea conceived almost 10 years ago has now grown into an iconic work that represents the creative might of the city and highlights the beauty of the Cantonese dialect. As the commissioner, co-presenter and co-producer of the musical, WestK feels immensely proud of its myriad achievements. We hope The Impossible Trial will go even further, with creative seeds for other excellent productions sown along the way. Join us, fans of The Impossible Trial, on this fabulous journey!”

Poon Wai Sum, Artistic Director, Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, said, “The homecoming of The Impossible Trial is undeniably a major cultural highlight of our city! Not only does its celebrated return bear further testament to the unique appeal of Hong Kong’s original musicals, but its inaugural tour to Shanghai and Beijing also marks a veritable milestone for the HKRep. The Impossible Trial’s numerous awards and critical acclaim present to national and global audiences alike the potential of the Cantonese stage being ‘rooted in Hong Kong while setting its eyes on the world.’ The creative team has put in so much effort in polishing and refining this jewel. This time, along with new members, conditions are favourable to inject new energy in the show’s future growth. I’m delighted to witness all this and look forward to seeing The Impossible Trial reach new heights, extending this Hong Kong classic to theatregoers around the world.”

Daisy Tsang, CEO of HSBC Life Hong Kong and Macau, said, “We are proud to be the title sponsor of this award-winning production, celebrating not only in Hong Kong, but also across numerous cities of the Mainland. Arts and culture, much like the insurance industry, resonate deeply with what matters most to our customers, that is achieving balance in life and enhancing our mental wellness. We are excited to see the impact this production will have on its audience and are proud to be part of this inspiring initiative.”
