Cheung Ngar Lai joined the HKRep as a full-time company member in 2014. Her recent productions include In Times of Turmoil (as Gui Yuxin), Three Brothers (as the girlfriend) and Footprints in the Snow (re-run, as Song Yanling), Circle Mirror Transformation (as Theresa) and Hello Dolly! – the musical (as Irene Molloy). More recently, she collaborated with Kiki Cheung in creating Ladies, Bon Voyage – a Cabaret.
Cheung has appeared with different companies prior to joining the HKRep, among them Actors’ Family’s 1941 Girl; Pants Theatre Production’s Once Upon a Time in Choi Yuen Chuen and its sequel, and A Variation of Zhang Xue-liang; We Draman’s Doubt; Cinematic Theatre’s The Twin Spirit; Theatre Space’s A Life and I, Ching (performance in Los Angeles); Hong Kong Theatre Works’ Twelfth Night; Class 7A Drama Group’s And Then There Were None; Theatre Noir’s Animal Farm as well as iStage’s Soulmate (premiere and re-run). In mid-2013, she joined Dionysus Contemporary Theatre as a founding member, appearing in Equus. In addition to her theatre performances, Cheung has appeared in film as well as on television (RTHK and Hong Kong Television Network). She was nominated as Best Supporting Actress (Tragedy/Drama) at the 22nd Hong Kong Drama Awards for her role as Mrs. Muller in Doubt.
Cheung graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a BFA degree with honours majoring in acting, and London’s Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts with MA with Distinction in Performance – Acting course. She also holds a Bachelor Degree of Laws (Hons) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (with distinction) from the University of Hong Kong, as well as a Grade 8 Certificate in Singing by the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music.
