Chan is a veteran arts administrator serving the cultural industry for 41 years, including his early dates in the Hong Kong government’s Cultural Services Department, specializing in performing arts programme planning, community arts projects and venue operation and management. Chan had also administered the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre and Hong Kong Dance Company, produced theatrical and dance productions when both companies were funded by the former Urban Council in the 80s.
Chan was appointed the Executive Director of the incorporated Hong Kong Repertory Theatre in April 2001. He has devoted his efforts to promoting and developing mainstream theatre and theatre education. He also strengthened the Theatre’s corporate image and brand, actively sought support from the community at large, and established exchanges and co-operations among organizations.
Chan is currently an appointed Member of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, an Expert Adviser of Home Affairs Bureau’s Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme, and an Advisory Committee Member of the School of Humanities and Social Science, and Bachelor of Translation with Business at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong.
Chan was the recipient of the 2009 Hong Kong Drama Award as an “Outstanding Theatre Administrator”, the awardee of the 2011 Secretary for Home Affairs’ Commendation Scheme, the 2014 Medal of Honour (MH) and the 2019 Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) in recognition of his contribution to the promotion of arts administration and development of theatre sector in Hong Kong.
