''the 9 fridas'' (Wales x Taiwan x Hong Kong)
27.10.2016 - 30.10.2016
The legend of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s brought boldly to the live stage
The 9 fridas is a mosaic, a collage of impressions and stories reecting the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) and the fictional journey of ‘F’ through the 9 Hells of the Mayan Underworld. ‘F’ is accompanied by a chorus of figures who, like her, are and are not Frida Kahlo, but whose stories echo actual events from Frida’s life: the betrayed wife, the political activist, the teenager severely disabled in a road accident, the fashion icon, the struggling artist…
The 9 fridas is written by playwright Kaite O’Reilly from Wales and directed by Prof. Phillip Zarrilli who has developed a system of actor training emphasising psychophysical acting. He will lead a cast of performers from Taiwan and Hong Kong to bring to life the different faces of the world’s most famous female artist, Frida Kahlo. The 9 fridas is not simply a traditional biographical work, but a New Writing form of narrative theatre utilizing soliloquy, dialogue, video footage and narration to create and examine the artist’s struggles in life, and to shed light on situations today.
World premiere production commissioned by Taipei Arts Festival 2014
