SCROOGE! – the Musical
Adapted from Charles Dickens’ renowned novel A Christmas Carol
5 additional performances for this family-fun Broadway musical
【Hong Kong Repertory Theatre】The award-winning SCROOGE! – the Musical is presented for a third holiday season in Hong Kong! At its 2009 premiere, the production took the city by storm and received three Hong Kong Drama awards. SCROOGE! – the Musical is adapted from Charles Dickens’ renowned novel A Christmas Carol with book, music and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse (UK) and Chinese translation by HKRep Artistic Director Anthony Chan. Directed by Michael Dobbin (Canada) with choreographer Mohamed Drissi and music coordinator Frankie Ho, SCROOGE! – the Musical features Pichead Amornsomboon in the title role, along with Ko Hon Man, Mercy Wong, Chow Chi Fai, Yau Ting Fai, Lau Shau Ching, ManMan Kwok and Karrie Tan, as well as many young actors in song and dance, taking the audience to a magical journey filled with love and warmth! Five additional performances are announced for this second revival of SCROOGE! – the Musical in response to the overwhelming ticket sales. The musical runs from 16th December 2017 to 1st January 2018 at the Lyric Theatre, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Tickets are now available at HK Ticketing. It is performed in Cantonese and song lyrics in English with Chinese and English surtitles, recommended for anyone aged 3 or above.
SCROOGE! – the Musical is about the miserly title character (played by Pichead Amornsomboon) who lived in the 19th century England; he only cared about money and didn’t approve of others celebrating the holidays. Yet on Christmas Eve, Scrooge met with some strange circumstances: his old business partner Marley (played by Ko Hon Man) and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future (played by Mercy Wong, Chow Chi Fai and Wang Wei respectively) paid him a visit and brought him on an adventure across time and space, helping him rediscover long-lost love and dreams.
Today, most people are consumed by materialistic desires. Director Michael Dobbin states, “Charles Dickens, the author of our story, lived in a much different time of history, but the problem people face were very similar. Every day of working on this production reminds me how greedy we have become in our developed world. Maybe we need to rethink it now.” He hopes this production will inspire people to realize Dickens’ simple hope — that a few of his readers might pick up on the theme and make “generosity” the centre of their own lives. “Generosity does not need to be about money, it can be about sharing time, sharing knowledge, sharing compassion, sharing joy, sharing food, sharing space, and sharing love for one another. This is the challenge presented by SCROOGE! – the Musical.”
The premiere of SCROOGE! – the Musical received three accolades at the Hong Kong Drama Awards, including Best Leading Actor (Tragedy/Drama), Best Image Design and Top Ten Most Popular Productions. For this second revival, the production transfers to the stage of the Lyric Theatre, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. The wider stage allows even more flexibility in realizing this production – a magical occasion for families to celebrate the holidays with laughter and joy!
