Panasonic proudly sponsors "Le Fils"
A heartrending play by Frenchman Florian Zeller
Following his earlier play, Le Père, another story about family

【HKRep】The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre, after the premiere and two re-runs of Le Père, brings this final instalment of Zeller’s “family trilogy” on stage. With a script imbued with passion and honesty, this play lays bare how love can be recast as a paradox in the modern family. Nominated for France’s Globe de Cristal Awards in 2019 and made into a 2022 film. Le Fils is directed by HKRep Assistant Artistic Director Yau Ting Fai, who leads the audiences to stare point blank at this dilemma while pondering the possibility of intimacy in a seemingly barren landscape. Le Fils, written by Florian Zeller and directed by Yau Ting Fai, features Yu Hon Ting, Mercy Wong, Kiki Cheung and Lo Man Chak. The production runs from 27th September to 12th October at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre. An additional performance (10th October) has been scheduled because of strong demand. Tickets are available now from URBTIX outlets.

Le Fils is about a young man troubled by adolescent awakenings struggles to find his place in the world while his parents grapple between guilt and kindness, hoping to atone for their estrangement… Each time they try to pull closer, they push each other further into the abyss of loneliness… When the desire to connect only brings endless alienation, what’s the point of existence?

Le Fils is a play in which Florian Zeller—praised as “one of the most important playwrights of our time”—continues his in-depth exploration of familial bonds and the human psyche. His works have been renowned for their subtle emotional depictions and unique narrative structures, often centering on the topic of family, delving deep into the fragility and complexity of life. His “family trilogy”—Le Père, La Mère and Le Fils—has generated wide resonance in the theatre world, having been translated into many languages and performed around the globe. Zeller’s works not only shine on European stages but have received critical acclaim everywhere. His plays have been produced numerous times on Broadway and in the West End, proving him as a playwright who successfully traverses the boundaries of language and culture.

Apart from stage works, Zeller has also participated in filmmaking. He adapted Le Père and directed The Father starring Anthony Hopkins in the title character, which won two Academy Awards in 2021: “Best Adapted Screenplay” and “Best Actor”. In 2022, he adapted Le Fils and directed The Son, maintaining his focus on the family.

Director Yau Ting Fai states, “Le Fils is close to real life, perhaps too close. It’s like a mirror reflecting things I normally don’t want to face, or deliberately want to avoid. During the working process, the script has forced me to reexamine my own actions and words in daily life. Although what happens in the story seems quite distant from my own life today, I can’t help but ponder: what if someday it seeps into my life surreptitiously and becomes a part of me? What can I do to avert tragedy? When tragedy inevitably happens, how can I move forward?”

Le Fils will take the audience into a family filled with strife yet rendered powerless. Although people share a deep love, yet they cannot save each other. All of these trigger our own thoughts on psychological health. This isn’t just a play; it’s more of a mirror reflecting the most fragile corners in each of our hearts.
