“Our entire generation is trapped by fate. We all share a troubled past…”
The story begins with Wu Song fighting a tiger in Jingyang Pass. After joining the heroes in Liang Mountain, he is crestfallen, recognising that life in the barren hills is monotonous and uninspiring. While leader Song Jiang bides his time waiting for the Emperor’s pardon, Li Kui (aka “Black Tornado”) rushes to the capital ready to kill. Whether by coincidence or thanks to destiny, Wu Song now has a mission: leading the team to bring Li back to the fold. Will they succeed? What do these heroes really aspire to in life?
This screen verson of The Diary of Song is taken from archival video of its 2017 premiere at the Hong Kong City Hall. Despite the passage of time, Wu Song exudes charm and tales of the Water Margin continue to enchant. The HKRep offers this screen version to those beyond geographical boundaries as we examine the inner world of our protagonist, each part of this “diary” an interesting variation of conventional beliefs—and perhaps a glimpse into Poon Wai Sum’s philosophy of life.
This production won both Best Original Script and Outstanding Production of the year at the 27th Hong Kong Drama Awards. Lee Chun Chow, who played the title character, was also nominated as Best Leading Actor (Comedy/Farce). This classic combination of playwright/director/leading cast in high-definition format is a rare opportunity not to be missed.
